Foundation of River & Basin Integrated Communications

Since its establishment in 1985, FRICS has been collecting, processing and disseminating information on rivers for the purpose of enhancing the speed and accuracy of flood management strategies undertaken by governments at the national, prefectural and local level. In this way, FRICS is committed to ongoing R&D, field studies and technology development for the purpose of boosting the speedy and accurate dissemination of river information.
Other activities of FRICS include the following:
1. Establishing water-related information database of rivers and basins, and delivering such data;
2. Reviewing hydrological observation set-up of Japan;
3. Assisting flood hazard map development of national/municipal governments;
4. Assisting flood risk management drills of national/municipal governments;
5. Studying disaster response capacity enhancement measures of people and national/municipal governments;
6. Research on disaster management highly utilizing ICT;
7. Developing and spreading the unified run-off analysis model;
8. International cooperation on flood management and required information;
9. Developing food information systems of other countries;
10. Running training courses on river information and disaster risk management;
11. Organizing symposium on river information; and
12. Funding research of university researchers and others.
